This is so important. I was on a plane a few days ago listening to The Wilderness, a podcast about the downfall of the Democratic party in the 2016 election. As I hit pause on an episode that details why men just couldn’t with Hilary, the plane landed and I saw the announcement about Warren. The NYT comments (which are sometimes a more polished form of liberal male misogyny) were so hopeless and sad.
“She’s easy to pick apart.”
“She’s not likable.”
“Too shrill.”
“Not friendly enough.”
My heart sank as I thought here we go again.
New liberal superheroes like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez give me hope, but even then there’s something to be said from hateful men on both sides — she “didn’t struggle enough,” she’s a “shiny new object,” she dresses too nice, she doesn’t dress nice enough. Give me a fucking break.
I strongly believe if women are ever to “be enough” to make it in the highest office, women will be the one to do it. White people didn’t elect Obama. And even well-intentioned men won’t get us there, either.
