I so appreciate your perspective. I visited Havana last month as a non-Cuban American for the first time, and the best part of the week for me was having a three-hour conversation with a young Cuban professor who passionately explained his perspective on culture, life, politics and history of the country. We paid him for his time and had the opportunity to ask many questions. I left with a much better understanding of the Cuban way of life and I can understand completely why you’d dislike the “Instagram vacation” perspective. I made a personal choice to not post any photos of my trip on social media and instead I wrote an article here about my experience, in hopes of enlightening people like me who seek to travel there on a “supporting the Cuban people” visa. We need more writers and strong voices like yours, thank you for this essay.
